Fixing the Right Problem

If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn’t sit for a month.

~Theodore Roosevelt

If I had a penny for all the times I wanted to kick someone else when it was actually my fault I’d be a very wealthy man.

It is so easy to look for blame in others.  Few people like to admit they have flaws and faults that could be getting in the way.  However, knowing I am my own biggest problem is also liberating.  If I’m the problem, I don’t have to ask anyone for permission to fix things.

It Shouldn’t Be About The Money

To fulfill a dream, to be allowed to sweat over lonely labor, to be given a chance to create, is the meat and potatoes of life. The money is the gravy.

~Bette Davis

The other day, I was feeling sorry for myself.  Several bills had come due at the same time, and I hadn’t planned well enough.  I was wishing I had won the lottery, my book was selling better, the government didn’t take so much in taxes, or that my paycheck was larger.

It is so easy to be unhappy about the amount of money we make.  Or to focus on it the money rather than the work.  Quite frankly, in today’s world of instant gratification, teenage billionaires, and increasing materialism there will always be that “one more thing” we need to have or experience.

What is the point of all this accumulation?  If you hate what you are doing then any time spent doing it is too much.   However, if you make the opportunity and take the effort to change what you do from work to creative art, then it is “the doing” that becomes important.  Money and other physical rewards become icing on the cake.

So, I need to stop moping about needing a larger paycheck.  Back to the real work of nurturing relationships, finding ways to serve others, and creating value!
