“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
This has been a tough holiday season. Within the past three weeks we have learned two of our friends are in the last stages of their battle against cancer. Quite frankly, it sucks. These are two of the nicest people I know–either of them would give you the shirt off their back if you asked them.
The first is a thirty-something mother of two. Her two daughters are just a little younger than my daughter. She has been my surrogate sister for almost 15 years. We watched her fall in love, get married, and have both of her kids. Fortunately, her family is doing much better than I think I would if the situations were reversed. It has been inspirational to see their strength and the support they receive from their friends and family.
The other friend of ours only recently learned he has pancreatic cancer. He now has resigned to spend as much time as he has left with his family. This gentleman, was a very successful cardiologist. He led mission trips to Guatemala; Ensenada, Mexico; and Haiti. Further, he was the kind of guy that would go through silent auctions last, and bid on everything that hadn’t been purchased. When out with a group, he had the “irritating” habit of leaving the table early and paying the bill.
Learning what these two are facing was a huge wake up call. These two were going along fine when, WHAM, their lives were completely changed. If it can happen to them, it can happen to anyone.
So the real question is… Why are we not working on our dreams today? What have we done, today, that will get us closer to our dreams? What have we done that will help us leave that leadership legacy?
We don’t have forever. Every day we don’t work on our dreams, is a wasted day. It is time we cannot get back. And, honestly, we don’t know how much time we have left. So the bottom line is: we need to get off our backsides and start working. If not now, when? What the heck are you waiting for?!?Image Credit: http://pastorerickson.com/?p=5556
